To make matters worse the prime suspect is Valentin Kalishenko, the man who taught Will everything she knows about putting a knife where it needs to go. But she called Hart and Halloway's Travelling Circus and Sideshow home for five years, and Ruby Donner, the circus's tattooed ingenue, was her friend. New York, 1946: The last time Will Parker let a case get personal, she walked away with a broken face, a bruised ego, and the solemn promise never again to let her heart get in the way of her job. To uncover the truth, Will and her boss, world-famous detective Lillian Pentecost, travel south into a snakepit of old grudges, small-town crime, and secrets worth killing for. Prior to my doctoral studies, I completed my MA Victorian Literature, Art and Culture at Royal Holloway (Distinction), and my BA English at Jesus College, Cambridge (First).Someone's put a blade in the back of the Amazing Tattooed Woman, and Willowjean "Will" Parker's former knife-throwing mentor has been stitched up for the crime. I've written, edited and acted in multiple short performances for the Royal Holloway Arts Collections and Picture Gallery alongside my partner in chaos Claudia Chapman, portraying everything from ghostly College lesbian diarists to voraciously moustachioed Victorian Arctic explorers. Previously, I've taught Playwriting, The Pre-Raphaelite Revolution: Poetry and Painting, Introducing English Poetry and Thinking as a Critic, as well as guest lecturing on Creative Writing and Neo-Victorian Women at the University of Delaware. This year, I'm convening the EN2217/3217 Queer Histories module, and teaching on the CW2020 Fiction course. I have Associate Fellowship of AdvanceHE. Goldman Pre-Raphaelite Fellow at the University of Delaware and Delaware Art Museum in September 2021, and Co-Director of the Royal Holloway Centre for Victorian Studies from 2019-2020.

Queer theory and queer critical practice.Elizabeth Siddal and the Pre-Raphaelites.The practice and practicalities of queer historical fiction. My work on Siddal can be found in Word & Image, the forthcoming Pre-Raphaelite Sisters collection (eds Glenda Youde and Robert Wilkes), and online talks, blogs and podcasts. I delve more into the novel's form here, and chat about it on a podcast here.įor my thesis, I'm queer reading the work of the Pre-Raphaelite artist-poet Elizabeth Siddal (1829-1862), and hoping to show how a combination of queer theory and creative close reading can illuminate Siddal's art and poetry beyond cisheteronormative interpretative lenses. My debut novel Nettleblack, a queer Neo-Victorian adventure following a runaway heir/ess and a gang of crime-fighting misfits, was published by Cipher Press in 2022 I'm currently working on the sequel for 2024. I'm a novelist and AHRC TECHNE-funded doctoral candidate.
